You need a good headshot photographer but you’re unsure of how much you should be paying? It’s a tough question to answer so I’ve researched other headshot photographers all over the internet and below is a summary of what I’ve found.

There is no definite answer to what you should be paying and there are lots of factors to take into account but there are a couple of things you should consider if you want to make sure you’re going to be happy with your headshot.

Its very easy to set up business as a headshot photographer and its a relative low risk business model as opposed to a wedding photographer who has to get it right on the day. All a photographer needs is a basic camera, 50mm lens and one studio or off camera flash or, if they’re using daylight, then not even that. Although you should be a bit wary if that is all they have!

Before I begin to get into the nuts and bolts of what you could be paying there are a few questions you should be asking your potential headshot photographer. Firstly, how long have they been doing it and who have you worked for? This is a good one to start with as that will give you a good gauge of other companies who have trusted them. Also ask for a few testimonials from past clients to back this up. This might not be an obvious question but also do ask if they have indemnity and liability insurance as generally only professionals have this and it should be a consideration if anyone should fall over a light stand and hurt themselves.

Right so below is what I’ve found for prices (and these are all UK photographers) so it will vary to where you are from. I’m not going to give the actual names of the photographers because it would be unprofessional of me to do this so I’ll have used abbreviations.

First up is HP and they charge £285 for a 1 hour session. HH charge £129 for 3 images and 3 outfit changes over 1 and a half hours. KK charge £160 for 1 hour and all photos are given to the client. GH charge £185 for 1.5 hours and 3 images will be retouched. AH does a 60-90 minute outdoor session for £175 with 4 images retouched. MP charge £300 for 2 hours and 3 retouched. JC charges £250 for 1.5 hours and 3 images retouched. SG is £160 for 1 hour and 5 retouched and lastly SL is £240 for 1-1.5 hours with 2 will be retouched.

So there’s a huge range of prices there and lots of different options although it doesn’t factor in one of the most important parts of being a headshot photographer and that is making the subject comfortable and at ease in front of the camera and how to direct that person to get the best image. This isn’t about the camera or technical side of the job but about people skills and that is perhaps the most important element of being a headshot photographer.

I hope that has helped and do get tin touch if I can help with your headshots. Call me on 07792 366002 or email me here
